Improve Your Woodworking Skills

 

Jim is the creator of Artistic Wood Studio; designer, 30+year woodworking artisan, a licensed Oregon contractor and local college woodworking instructor. Artistic Wood Studio offers several workshops & classes throughout the year; workshops involving hands-on participation by students. There will be a maximum of two students to ensure full focus on each student and their safety. In classes that are mostly involved with demonstrations, there will be a maximum of six students. These classes are held in a working custom furniture shop. Some classes and workshops can be scheduled to meet the students days of the week and time frame. Some classes may require subsequent classes to attend. These workshops & classes include the following subjects:

 

Very Basic Woodworking

 

This workshop held for 3 hours mornings or evenings is designed for the individual who has thought about whether or not woodworking is right for them and how to learn woodworking safely. This workshop may be the answer for you. Included in this workshop are the basics of using hand and power tools that are used in the wood shop, with the main focus on safety. Each student will have me at their side to learn hands-on the safe way to use the power tools that you may never use on your own. Each student will have learned enough to create their own small project on there own at home. Now is the time to try woodworking; who knows...you may just get yourself in the “I love woodworking Club”, like many of our students have become members of over the years.

Woodworking I

 

A hands-on course that covers the basic concepts of woodworking and furniture making. This two-evening class 6 PM - 9 PM includes a combination of demonstrations and hands-on practice. This workshop includes general shop safety (with particular attention to the safe use of the table saw). Students will utilize the skills, techniques, and tools (both power and hand tools) taught in class in the making of a small project. Skills learned will provide a foundation for subsequent furniture-making classes.

$260 plus material

 

Woodworking II

 

A three-evening 6 PM - 9 PM workshop that is a continuation of the Woodworking I class. This workshop utilizes a combination of hand tools and power tools in the construction of one of three valuable pieces of furniture, using techniques learned in the previous workshop and put to use, along with more advanced techniques introduced in this workshop. These new skills include mortise and tenon joints, finishing skills, grain matching, and the use of misc. hand planes, learned by the students while making their own beautiful piece of furniture. Woodworking I is a prerequisite for this workshop.                                                                    $ 220 plus material

 

Wood lathe basics workshop

 

This workshop includes the basics involved with turning wood on a wood lathe including wood selection, preparation of material and tool selection, plus hands-on use of a wood lathe. This is a 2 1/2 hour evening workshop 6 PM to 8:30 PM.     $180

 

 

Cabinet-making Fundamentals

 

This workshop concentrates on techniques used in cabinet making rather than furniture making. There will be one project made in this workshop; a one-day workshop 9:30 AM-4:30 PM with a one-hour lunch break at noon. This class features techniques such as cutting plywood panels to size, using wood edging, making and applying molding, using routers, Domino joiner, using pocket hole jigs, and milling for adjustable shelves. This workshop is designed for beginners through intermediate woodworkers. The skills learned in this workshop will aid individuals in many home projects. The project you build may eliminate your need to purchase cabinets or bookshelves. This workshop will provide students with a foundation for more advanced projects kitchen cabinets, entertainment centers, bookshelves, and more. More advanced skills such as dovetailed drawers and door making will be offered in future classes.

Router 101

 

The router is one of the most versatile power tools in the wood shop. This workshop includes the use of hand-held routers and router tables. Many people only know a fraction of what this great tool can do. With the aid of a variety of router bits, jigs and fixtures the router can be used to create mortises, tenons, dadoes, sliding dovetails, raised paneled doors, arched doorways, picture frames and more. Most of these techniques will be demonstrated and discussed along with examples of different types of routers and their best use. Time permitting, students will have an opportunity to practice some of these cuts themselves. This one night workshop is held from 6PM-9 PM.

Jigs, Guides, and Fixtures

 

This full-day class is from 9 AM - 4 PM with one-hour lunch break at noon this class is for students that have some prior experience with woodworking or have attended one of our subsequent classes included in this class are the making and use of crosscut sleds for use on the table saw, feather boards, router and saw guides, a router jig for adjustable shelf pins, a variety of push sticks, a router jig for cutting circles, a circle cutting jig for the band saw, a router guide for making dados, a table saw taper cutting jig and use of a factory-made dovetail jig. The use of all these items will be demonstrated and the making of individual jigs will be limited to time restraints. Jigs and fixtures for table saws, band saws, and routers. will be a valuable asset to your shop, plus improve the quality of your work and your safety.                                   $275

 

 

Basic box building, using 5 different types of joints and several different styles of boxes.

 

This class includes how to make several different styles of boxes and the processes involved in the making of 5 different types of joinery used in a variety of styles of boxes. Students will learn how to use hand and power tools, jigs, and fixtures to mill each component for each box design. This is a 2-night course, 6 PM to 9 PM or a one-day class from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.                                     ** 275 + $65 material charge 

 

Build your own router table

 

This class includes designs and plans for one of two designs of router tables. This class shows students the techniques and joinery necessary to construct an approximately 4ft long by 2ft deep floor model router table & fence, a tool that will last for years to come. This is a 2 day class from 9 AM to 4 PM.       

$ 295 + $80 material charge + student furnished accessories.

 

 

Learn the Basics of finishing

 

This workshop explores the different types of finishes, their applications and differences, tools and techniques for each finish, and their best use. This workshop is 4 hours long.                                                                               $125 + $ 25 material charge.

 

 

Build your own beautiful wood table

 

This class teaches students the basics of construction and joinery techniques for one of two designs using a combination of hand and power tools. The student selects the size and design of the table to be made. This is a 3-night course, 6 PM to 9 PM or a 1-day class from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM                                                   

 ** $295 + material charge depending on table size and wood selected.

 

 

Build your own beautiful wood bed

 

This class teaches students the basics of bed design and building with each student building their own bed with a choice of several different designs and woods. This is a 3-night course, 5 pm to 9 pm, or a 2-day class from 10 AM to 3 PM.                                                    **  $275 + material cost depending on table size and wood selected.

 

 

Choose your own project

 

These classes are designed to help individuals build the item of their own choosing, time and dates are set to meet the student's needs and the class cost will be determined at the time an individual's class date is set.

 

 

Refresher woodworking workshops

 

These workshops are designed for students with prior woodworking experience that want to review a particular woodworking technique or type of equipment's operation.

These workshops are usually 2 to 4 hours long depending on the subject(s) covered, with their                                                                                                cost staring at $175

 

 

Make your own wood door with mortise and tenon joinery.

 

This class teaches students the process of selecting material, milling, & constructing

a quality wood door using hand and power tools. This is a 3-night course, 5:30 pm to 8:30 PM, or a 2-day class from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM.               

 ** $275 + material cost depending on door size and wood selected.

 

 

 

Make a basic wood side chair (without arms)

 

This class includes how to determine chair specifications, wood selection, milling material, the making of mortise and tenon joinery, and the construction of a basic side chair. This is a 5-night class from 6 PM to 9 PM or 2-day classes from 9 AM to 4 PM. 

 ** $475 + material cost depending on wood selected.

 

 

 

** If a class requires a material charge, the student may furnish their own material.

 

 

Jim will instruct individuals on various woodworking projects selected by his students. We are open to requests and suggestions for projects and alternative days and times for classes.

 

 

Woodworking is a dangerous craft! It is also one that depends upon the individual to fully understand its consequences. Ignoring safety practices, using tools improperly, or operating tools under the influence of alcohol or drugs may lead to serious injury. Don't attempt any technique unless you fully understand it. It is our role to provide you with instruction, so rely on us for assistance and guidance. There are no stupid questions you can ask, so please take advantage of our expertise. We will ask you to sign a liability awareness and release form before beginning any workshop.

 

 

Students must be 18 years old or older unless accompanied by an adult and approved by the owners of Artistic Wood Studio. All workshops are held in Riddle, Oregon, approximately 20 miles south of Roseburg, Oregon, and 49 miles north of Grants Pass, Oregon.
